The essential joy of being with horses is that it brings us in contact with the rare elements of grace, beauty, spirit, and fire.

- Sharon Ralls Lemon

A well body is a functionally fit body. Our programs emphasis healthy lifestyle choices including exercise. In addition to walking and riding, we also have an Equicizer for targeted fitness goals.

Stress and cluttered thoughts can create havoc in our lives. We use our nearly 3 decades of Yoga and mind-body practice to help you rid your life of stress, and improve cognitive wellness.

Joy, playfulness, imagination, peace.
When did you experience all of those bliss filled emotions in a single day? Happiness and peace are a gift to ourselves, and we deserve to make it a priority!

Holistic Equine Assisted Wellness

Wellness is not a 'medical fix' but a way of living - a lifestyle sensitive and responsive to all the dimensions of body, mind, and spirit, an approach to life we each design to achieve our highest potential for well-being now and forever.

- Greg Anderson

The Center For Equine Assisted Wellness offers a comprehensive program that serves children and adults with physical, emotional, cognitive, developmental, intellectual and socio-economic special needs. We specialize in the unique needs of Veterans, those in recovery from addictions, trauma or life altering circumstances, and women and children who are rebuilding their lives after domestic abuse or violence. Our programming is primarily ground work based, although mounted work, riding, and Equicizer sessions may be incorporated into to the clients plan of progress if it will compliment their goals.

We understand the fears and challenges our clients face, they have a new start...but how do they make it work when they are on their own? That's what where we come in. Our programs include everything our clients need to assist them in their path toward empowered independence. This includes valuable life skills such as effective communication, goal setting, responsible functioning including budgeting, planning, personal care, even healthy life choices regarding exercise and nutrition, such a meal planning, cooking skills and more.

Our services are offered in private and group sessions, and are offered at no cost to our clients. Each person who visits our farm will have be allowed to create their path toward wellness and wholeness without the added stress of financial concern. This is made possible through the clients reciprocal participation in volunteer efforts, and outreach, and the generous support of private donors, grants, and community based fundraising events.

Because our approach is so personalized, we serve a limited number of clients each year. We offer our programming from April through November, with December, January, February and March off. This gives our team of therapy horses, and our volunteer staff, ample time to rest, recharge, and restore their own personal wholeness after delivering eight months of emotionally, physically and spiritually intensive sessions. During this time, they also attend training and professional development opportunities, and create and pilot new programming options.

Are you a licensed counselor, physical, occupational or, speech therapist, or a licensed social worker interested in making a difference with Veterans or Active Duty soldiers and their families? With women with breast cancer? Individuals who are rebuilding their lives after abuse, trauma, or addictions? Please consider joining us at the Center to learn about Equine Assisted Wellness, including Equine Assisted Psychotherapy, Equine Assisted Learning, and Hippotherapy, and how horses can help your clients.  Our unique program is an experiential method proven particularly effective for those dealing with PTSD, in recovery, and those with special needs. These hands on experiences are easily adapted for Individuals, families, and groups, and all actively participate to reach their personal and therapeutic goals and outcomes.

Why horses?  Horses are sentient creatures with a highly evolved sensory system. Their finely honed instincts allow them to think, feel and react to primal, authentic behavior, the behaviors we so often push deep within ourselves. They are experts at detecting the protective layers we build for ourselves, and the behaviors we exhibit that keep us from being the people we really want to be. They offer immediate feedback, providing clients an opportunity to understand how their behavior effects others. Working with a 1200 pound animal, without ever speaking a word, helps set in motion the ability to overcome fear, and work through the obstacles that challenge us in our personal lives, at work, and with family.

We are a 100% volunteer program, delivering our services during an 8 month season each year. We work with a team of 9 exceptionally trained equine, each with a unique personality, and special gifts they share. Our team is one of the most experienced and credentialed in the area, and holds national certifications in Hippotherapy, Equine Assisted Psychotherapy and Learning, specialized graduate level education and training in social psychology and the needs of Veterans, and those in recovery. And additional education and certification in health and wellness of both humans and horses.

Our Director is Colleen Cheechalk, who is the owner of Epona Wellnes Consulting LLC, and Epona Farm, where our program has made its home since it began. With an adult professional volunteer staff, we work tirelessly to ensure our clients have a safe, beneficial and joy filled experience that helps them achieve their goals for holistic wellness.
